For many people, 2020 had already felt like it started rocky. Many tragedies have occurred and it seems like a constant flood of news that we don’t want to hear. About 2-3 months ago, the Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, emerged in China. Many memes were spread throughout social media and no one took this virus as seriously as it’s being taken right now. Many people are currently working from home and it’s evident that people aren’t going out as much due to the severity of the virus. When the virus arrived in New York City, it was evident that the numbers would increase if we didn’t take the precautions needed.
As a New Yorker, I was very used to living a busy fast-paced life. I was always out and about. I only was home to sleep. Slowly, everything started closing down and it has affected the way we are now living. Truly, I didn’t take COVID-19 as seriously as I needed to until the gym where I work closed down. Before the outbreak, members inquired if we would be closing down or not. We simply responded with, “I hope not.” Looking back now, social distancing is a huge change for all of us. Social distancing is the most we can do for our essential workers as well as for ourselves. This isn’t a time for hate as there’s enough of that in the world already. This is a time to be self-aware that everybody is going through this. Although COVID-19 has changed our lives in many unimaginable ways, we all need to overcome these adversities by sticking together with our loved ones. Also, we need to build a sense of community by being compassionate towards others. A strong community can grow together and overcome challenges associated with this outbreak.
During these difficult times, it’s important to check on our loved ones and as well as others who may be in situations that aren’t ideal. A few things that have helped me reduce my anxiety through this have been taking breaks from the news, home workouts, music, Tik-Toks, and even watching Netflix shows. Taking breaks from the news is important for me because it reduces my anxiety through these times and helps me understand that this is temporary. Working out and music are two of my favorite things in the world. Working out has made me realize how powerful our bodies are and has helped me realize the power of my mind as well. Tik Toks and Netflix shows are the go-to past-times that have helped me reduce my boredom at home. There are many ways to go about beating boredom but it is important to do what works best for you.
